Yikes – I didn’t hear this news yesterday.
A woman was sexually assaulted at the Lake City Fred Meyer during daylight hours. Hopefully we’ll get a sketch soon of the man who did this, which I’ll post.

ShareA woman was sexually assaulted in the parking lot of a North Seattle store in broad daylight on Wednesday.
Police said a man approached the woman as she got out of her car near the loading dock of a store in the 13000 block of Lake City Way NE at approximately 4:23 p.m.
The man, who was reportedly wielding a baseball bat and a large knife, threatened the woman, pushed her down to the ground near some dumpsters, then sexually assaulted her, police said.
The man ran off and remains at large.
The 50-year-old victim was taken to a hospital to be checked out.
The attacker was described as a black man, about 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighing 240 pounds. He was wearing a multi-colored knit cap and a light-colored shirt.

I used to shop regularly at the Lake City Fred Meyers because they have excellent prices and great fruits and produce. I stopped shopping there about a year ago because a small but significant number of people inside AND outside the store (parking lot) looked very sketchy.
Yup, I pay the higher prices at my local QFC or Whole Foods, but Lake City, and this particular area is not a place I chose to place myself at any time. The stretch between Fred Meyers and up to 145th is high crime. Check the stats.
Lake City has a bad reputation but does not have a high crime rate. True, there’s a little pocket of crime around 143rd St. but the main part of Lake City is safe. It’s not like Belltown. The statistics show that Lake City has a low crime rate in terms of robbery, car theft, murder. Reputation: bad. Reality: not so bad.
I live in Lake City and work at the Fred Meyer. I had heard about this story but thought that it was only a rumor. I can definitely say that there are some sketchy people that hang around Lake City Way. Isn’t that everywhere in the City of Seattle, though? I have been to a lot worse neighborhoods. I never feel unsafe walking home at 4am, and I’ve never witnessed any crime here (unlike when I lived in the Central District where you could witness crime on an hourly basis). Most of the people that hang outside of Fred Meyer are probably employees on their cigarette break! Regardless, it’s a shame that this happened but I personally think Lake City is a great neighborhood.
